Playing Tennis with Osteoarthritis
If you have osteoarthritis, no doubt you’ve been told that exercise is one of the best things you can do for it. We’d agree! So how do you make sense of the increased stiffness and pain the morning after a big day of exercise? Surely that can’t be good for you?
We talk about a little thing called the Goldilocks principle which - as you probably guessed - means finding the right amount. Not too much, not too little, but just the right amount.
If you move too much, you’ll likely find that the stiffness and pain in the morning has increased. Also if you don’t move enough, you’ll likely find that the stiffness and pain in the morning has increased. If you’re in the Goldilocks zone, you should wake with less pain and stiffness than you usually do.
This makes things easy. To find the Goldilocks zone, simply measure your activity (ie. daily steps or time playing tennis) and find the amount where your stiffness and pain isn’t as bad as it usually is the following morning.
